Piedras Negras, Mexico
NCC's Best buys sweat-free shirts from Mexico. The shirts are produced by the organization Dignity and Justice in the border town of Piedras Negras. Workers own 40% of the company, 30% is owned by Comite Fronterizo de Obreras, (CFO), and the remaining 30% by North Country Fair Trade.
Comite Fronterizo de Obreras began as a group devoted to teaching women about their rights, and to combating the terrible crimes against women in Mexico. The empowerment of some of these women made them fight for rights in the factories or maquilidoras responsible for producing many of the name brands seen in American stores. Unfortunately, these fights for basic worker rights led to the unemployment of these women. To respond to the need of these workers, Dignity and Justice was created.
